What's on your crime reading book list?

I know usually we all talk about individual cases, and often cite links.. But we don't really talk much about books here in the True Crime section. So I thought it would be interesting to start a thread about it. I don't usually have much True crime book action going on, I'm afraid my crime reading tends to more fictional tastes or "based off of" sorts of books... But I'm always up for a good read, and appreciate it when folks share reviews on books.

I just recently read a Lizzie Borden book by Arnold Brown that I picked up at a local library book sale. It was pretty interesting. It presents the case in historical context, utilizing newspaper articles and court snippets. It also presents the case as to how Lizzie wasn't the killer, and why the trial happened the way it did.

It's an engaging read. The author definitely leads you on several details about the case that seem to raise some question marks about how the case and trial were handled in general. He also follows up after the trial with some accounts that are rather interesting and could be rather telling. But I'll leave that part for folks that might want to read on.

Something I appreciated was an accounting of transcript action at the end of the book. Rather nice ending worth reading in and of itself.

So what all has been or is on folks reading lists?

How Frank Sheeran killed Jimmy Hoffa

It was a hot July afternoon, nearly 92 degrees, when Teamsters president and labor icon Jimmy Hoffa is said to have opened the rear door of a maroon 1975 Mercury in the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. and climbed in. He was never seen again. The FBI has expended countless resources in the ensuing decades in the hopes of finally solving this enduring American mystery with no success. But I believe, based on my 2004 investigation, that Frank Sheeran did it. "Suspects Outside of Michigan: Francis Joseph "Frank" Sheeran, age 43, president local 326, Wilmington, Delaware. Resides in Philadelphia and is known associate of Russel Bufalino, La Cosa Nostra Chief, Eastern Pennsylvania," reads the 1976 HOFFEX memo, the compilation of everything investigators knew about Hoffa's disappearance that was prepared for a high level, secret conference at FBI headquarters six months after he vanished.

As Drew Peterson wrapped up his 25-minute speech in court Friday, he turned in his chair and spoke directly to the prosecutor he tried to have killed.

"And Jim Glasgow, there was never any intent to have you killed," he said in a matter-of-fact tone, as prosecutors objected.

"That's all right," the former Bolingbrook police sergeant said, leaning back into his chair. "I'm done."

Moments later, Randolph County Judge Richard Brown sentenced Peterson to 40 years in prison.

Christine Jurek lived in Phoenix but her body was discovered by a fisherman west of the city in the Gila River on June 27 2010 at 12:45pm near the intersection of El Mirage Road and Indian Springs in Avondale, Arizona near the Phoenix International Raceway. This case has remained unsolved. Jurek's body was identified through fingerprints and a "sun-moon" tattoo on one of her feet. Her family is from Wisconsin and she had lived in Phoenix for 15 years working in the "adult entertainment" industry. None of Jurek's co-workers provided any useful information and police have said they suspect her death is an unsolved homicide.

A severed human foot has been found in a garden in Bath, the third grisly discovery in the city since February.

Avon and Somerset police say it was discovered in the garden of a house in Cranwells Park, and has been sent for forensic analysis.

"At this stage we are keeping an open mind as to whether or not this is linked to the previous two similar incidents in the city," said a police statement.

Slow-motion video replays of crimes shown in courtrooms may be distorting the outcomes of trials, according to a US study.

Researchers found that slowing down footage of violent acts caused viewers to see greater intent to harm than when viewed at normal speed.

Viewing a killing only in slow motion made a jury three times more likely to convict of first degree murder.

Bill Garretson Interview About Tate Murders

This is a radio interview with Bill Garretson, who was the caretaker of the Polanski/Tate residence on the night of the murders. He has a strange story to tell. He talks about what he heard and saw that night. He also claims two men came to the guesthouse looking to use the phone, carrying a baby. One in casual clothes and one in a suit. One holds a gun on him and one gives him the baby to hold. When they find out the phone is dead, they leave, refusing to take Garretson with them. This takes place some time before the arrival of the police.

This is just part two of a four part recording. At about 5:30 he starts to tell about the events from the time Steven Parent arrives at the guesthouse and the recording ends after his arrest.

Really would like to hear some opinions on this.

Edit: Just saw all the podcasts are listed. You want to listen to the second one of four interview recordings at the bottom of the second column. #38 At the beginning of #39, he talks a little more about the 2 men with the baby. Is it possible 2 men went to the Tate house between the time the Family left and the time the police were called? Could Sharon Tate have spontaneously given birth after her death? She was only 2 weeks from delivery. This totally freaked me out. Sounds like it belongs in the Conspiracy Forum!

https://archive.org/details/TheTateLabiancaRadioProgramPodcastPage

The letters he says he wrote were found on his desk on Saturday morning when the police arrived and took photos. He claims now that they have disappeared.

Man found dead, Secret Coded Note in pocket

Unsolved Homicide Mystery regarding the discovery of a dead African American man with mental disabilities . Ricky McCormick was found dead & dumped in a field & the only clue to how he got to the field & why, is a coded note in his pocket that the FBI cannot solve and needs the public's help. Ricky McCormick’s encrypted notes are one of CRRU’s top unsolved cases. “Breaking the code,” said Olson, “could reveal the victim’s whereabouts before his death and could lead to the solution of a homicide. Not every cipher we get arrives at our door under those circumstances.”

This man often in childhood used his own code for notes and story's and such according to his mother and sister, he had a 57-IQ and only rode a bicycle around this sleepy town of which he seldom strayed away from.

Has anyone any updates on this case? Have you seen and worked the code? Any luck with it?

Army to open criminal probe

WASHINGTON -- The Army said Saturday it will launch a criminal investigation into the April 2004 death of Pat Tillman, the former professional football player who was shot to death by fellow soldiers in Afghanistan in what previous Army reviews had concluded was an accidental shooting.

Col. Joseph Curtin, an Army spokesman, said the Defense Department office of inspector general had reviewed the matter at the Army's request and concluded that a criminal probe was warranted.

Members of the Tillman family were notified on Friday, Curtin said.

Curtin said the scope of the new investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Command, had not yet been determined in detail.

Members of the Tillman family were notified on Friday, Curtin said. In the past, Tillman's father, Patrick Tillman, and other family members have criticized the Army and its investigations.

"We are obligated to answer the family's questions, as we are with all grieving families,'' Curtin said.

Curtin said the scope of the new investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Command had not yet been determined in detail.

A Pentagon official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the new investigation has not been formally begun, said it would focus on possible charges of negligent homicide.

Tillman, 27, died on April 22, 2004, when he was struck by gunfire during a firefight along a canyon road near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The Army said at the time that the barrage of bullets came from enemy fire.

A report by the Army later found that troops with Tillman knew at the time that friendly fire had killed the football star. Officers destroyed critical evidence and concealed the truth from Tillman's brother, also an Army Ranger, who was nearby, the report found.

More than three weeks after a memorial service in San Jose, Calif., the Army announced on May 29, 2004, that friendly fire rather than an enemy encounter caused Tillman's death. However, even at the time of the memorial, top Army officials were aware that the investigation showed the death had been caused by an act of "gross negligence,'' the report said.

In spite of the Army's findings, the officer who prepared the report, Brig. Gen. Gary M. Jones, concluded there was no official reluctance to report the truth. Army officials have acknowledged that they should have better handled the information they released on Tillman's death.

Tillman joined the Army after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks even though he had a multimillion-dollar contract to play football for the Arizona Cardinals. He and his brother completed a tour in Iraq before going to Afghanistan.

'Making a Murderer' on Netflix

I thought this might already exist here, maybe it does and I missed it.

Anyway I'm sure a few people here have heard of the Netflix series that is making the rounds in news and media - Making a Murderer. I was unaware of the entire affair and while I'm glad that it's out there now and the episodes are showing as much as they are, it is causing a feeling of bleakness and utter rage.

Now it's a given that there will be elements of the actual truth, not included in the Netflix series as it runs, but so far what I have seen that is factual is shocking. All the violations of legal protocols, be it interrogation, investigation, coercing or even the basics of forensic examination are so apparent that they don't even need someone telling you why and yet the Judge and the Jury involved in this murder case are completely and utterly blind and moronic. Bah.

I'll stop my ranting there but is anyone else watching this or have any thoughts?

Francis Thompson was an extremist Catholic who apparently wasn't fond of prostitutes, a pyromaniac (apparently Mary Kelly's clothes were found burning in the fire at the crime scene according to a website that I've stupidly managed to lose), an ex-medical student (the women were cut up by someone who had good knowledge of cutting things up), a poet who wrote messed up poems about killing prostitutes by pretending he was performing abortions, if you read the poem he wrote it's almost a confession (also, the Jack The Ripper letters that the police got were well-written and had good hand-writing which must have meant that the guy was educated, right? And they were written in Red ink which would probably be more accessible to someone in the writing business in those days), he KNEW Mary Kelly (he lived at the same freakin' address) and Mary kelly was the odd one out of the victims, in age and the way she was cut up more, the psychological stuff matches him perfectly, apparently he kept a knife in his coat and there's a whole lot more detailed stuff to note.

The only problem is, according to the pictures of him I found, at the time of the murders he didn't really match the witness descriptions.

Oh and I think Mary Kelly is the key to solving the case, especially being the odd one out of the victims. I've got a few conspiracy ideas about her...

A North Carolina man who spent 28 years in prison on murder charges has been released after a judge ruled his trial was unfair.

Authorities will now consider whether Johnny Small, 43, should face a second trial in the 1988 murder of Pam Dreher.

Judge W Douglas Parsons ruled that there was not enough evidence to convict Small.

He also found that during the 1989 trial witnesses lied and police withheld key evidence.

On his first night in nearly 30 years outside of prison, Small slept on a cousin's sofa.

Killers Caught With Most Unlikely Evidences

There is no better sense of gratification than a killer getting caught for his or her crime when a case appears to have very little evidence initially and seems to be going to a dead end. Cold cases annoys the living hell out of me and there is always this feeling of disgust that the perpetrator of a heinous crime might be walking freely on the streets.

These killers thought they were smarter than the law but were finally convicted with the most unlikely of evidences.

Miami's "The Ghost" captured

During the years Pablo Escobar’s Medellín Cartel flooded Miami with cocaine, authorities say Anibal Mustelier was one of the city’s more deadly hitmen. In 1989, he allegedly machine-gunned a local businessman accused of taking money from the cartel. When that failed, he is said to have bombed the man’s car.

Mustelier is now 66, and has spent the past 26 years hiding as a fugitive from the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, and authorities in several countries. It was that knack for evasion that earned him the nickname “The Ghost.” He was so successful at hiding, in fact, that when officers in a Miami suburb caught a lead on a group of bank robbers earlier this month, they didn’t even know whom they were chasing.
